Top 7 Things to Do on Your First Visit to the Maldives
Updated September 2025
Why the Maldives is a Dream Destination
If you’re planning your very first trip to the Maldives, get ready for an experience that feels
like stepping into a postcard. Turquoise waters, powdery white beaches, and vibrant marine life
make this paradise a must-see. When I visited, I was surprised to discover that beyond the beauty,
there’s plenty of stuff to do in the Maldives—from adventurous dives to cultural
explorations.
1. Go Diving or Snorkeling in Baa Atoll
Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the best places to swim alongside manta rays
and whale sharks. I still remember floating above colorful coral gardens as schools of fish
darted around me—it was magical.
Tours typically cost between $150–$250 per person depending on the operator.
Check out Visit Maldives Official Site
for certified dive centers.
2. Experience a Sandbank Picnic
Imagine being dropped off on a tiny strip of sand in the middle of the ocean with nothing but
a picnic basket and the horizon around you. Sandbank excursions usually include snorkeling gear,
lunch, and drinks. Prices range from $100–$200 per person.
You can find operators via Google Maps.
3. Island Hopping
The Maldives is made up of over 1,000 islands, and island hopping is the best way to discover
local life beyond resorts. I loved visiting small fishing villages and chatting with locals
about their daily routines.
Public ferries are inexpensive (around $2–$5 per ride), while private speedboats can cost $100+.
Check routes at Maldives Transport Authority.
4. Sunset Dolphin Cruise
Few things compare to watching pods of dolphins leap against the backdrop of a Maldivian sunset.
On my trip, the entire boat erupted with cheers every time the dolphins danced near us.
Cruises cost around $50–$80 per person and can be booked through most resorts.

5. Try Watersports Adventures
From jet skiing and parasailing to kayaking, the Maldives offers plenty of water-based adventures.
My favorite was paddleboarding at sunrise—the water was so calm it felt like gliding over glass.
Prices vary: jet skiing ($70–$120), kayaking (often free at resorts), parasailing ($150+).
6. Romantic Private Dinner on the Beach
If you’re traveling as a couple, this is an unforgettable experience. Dining under the stars
with the waves just steps away feels like a movie scene. Many resorts offer packages starting
from $200–$400 per couple.
For details, check with Baros Maldives
or similar resorts offering private beach dinners.
7. Discover Malé’s Culture and History
While many skip the capital, I highly recommend spending at least half a day in Malé. The local
fish market, the Old Friday Mosque, and Sultan Park give you a glimpse of Maldivian culture.
Entry fees are minimal (around $5–$10). Directions available via
Google Maps.
