You have to start your journey right in the beating heart of the island. Whenever anyone asks me for advice, I always tell them to first Tour Corfu Old Town. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and stepping into it feels like wandering onto a movie set. The Venetians ruled here for centuries, and you can see it in every pastel-colored building, every narrow cobblestone alleyway (which the locals call “kantoúnia”), and the massive fortresses guarding the sea. Lose the map. Seriously, just wander around and let the winding streets surprise you.
Shopping in the Old Town
While you are wandering, you will quickly realize that Shopping in the Old Town is dangerously addictive! You won’t find boring mall brands here. Instead, the alleys are packed with tiny boutiques selling handmade leather sandals, beautiful olive wood carvings, and stunning gold jewelry. I always make sure to pick up some local kumquat liqueur—it is a sweet, citrusy drink that is uniquely Corfiot, and it makes the perfect gift to bring back home.
Visit cafes and local shops
When your feet start complaining, it is time to slow down and Visit cafes and local shops. The Liston promenade is the most famous spot for this. It was built by the French and looks exactly like the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Grab a seat under the elegant arches, order a cold “freddo espresso” (the ultimate Greek summer coffee), and just people-watch. It is the best way to soak up the local vibe, chat with friendly shop owners, and recharge before your next adventure.
Archaeological and the Byzantine Museum
If you are a bit of a history nerd like me, you cannot skip the island’s incredible past. Make some time to step out of the sun and check out the Archaeological and the Byzantine Museum. They are packed with fascinating artifacts, ancient coins, and breathtaking icons that tell the story of how this island survived empires, pirates, and wars. It gives you a profound appreciation for the ground you are walking on.
