Hey there, travel friends! If you are reading this, chances are you are dreaming of rolling green hills, ancient castles, and a perfectly poured pint of Guinness. I have been lucky enough to road-trip across the Emerald Isle multiple times, and let me tell you, it completely steals your heart. Whether you are navigating the narrow country lanes in a rental car or enjoying the lively chatter in a local pub, the warmth of the Irish people is unmatched. Planning an itinerary can be overwhelming because there is just so much ground to cover. As a travel writer who has gotten delightfully lost on these country roads more times than I can count, I have put together this guide to help you find the absolute best places in ireland to visit. Grab a cup of tea, and let’s start planning your ultimate Irish adventure!
When friends ask me to list the Top 10 places to visit in Ireland, I always struggle to narrow it down because every county has its own distinct magic. However, if you are building a master itinerary, your list should absolutely include a mix of vibrant cities and rugged coastlines. From the bustling streets of Dublin and the bohemian vibe of Galway, to natural wonders like the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, and the Giant’s Causeway up north. We will dive into many of these spots throughout this guide, mixing the heavy-hitters with a few of my favorite hidden gems so you get a truly authentic experience.
Most travelers fly directly into Dublin, and while the capital city is fantastic, I always advise people to get out into the countryside as soon as possible. If you are looking for the Best places to visit in Ireland near Dublin, you only need to drive about an hour south to find absolute paradise. The Wicklow Mountains National Park is my personal favorite day trip. We hiked around Glendalough, an ancient monastic settlement featuring a stunning round tower nestled between two dark, incredibly scenic lakes. It is peaceful, historically rich, and gives you that wild, rugged Irish landscape without having to drive across the entire country.
You cannot visit this country without feeling the weight of its incredible history. I constantly get asked: What are the top historical sites to visit in Ireland? While there are castles around almost every corner, you have to prioritize Newgrange. Located in County Meath, this prehistoric monument is a massive passage tomb that is actually older than the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge! I highly recommend booking your tickets months in advance. Walking into the inner chamber, knowing it was engineered over 5,000 years ago to align perfectly with the winter solstice sunrise, is a deeply humbling experience. Another must-see is the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary. Seeing this spectacular group of Medieval buildings set on an outcrop of limestone rising out of the Golden Vale is like stepping straight into a fantasy novel.
This is probably the toughest question I get asked. Every region has its own charm, but if you push me to answer, What is the prettiest part of Ireland to visit?, my mind immediately goes to the west coast, specifically along the Wild Atlantic Way. The Cliffs of Moher are world-famous for a reason. I remember walking along the paved pathways there, the wind whipping through my hair, looking down at the massive Atlantic waves crashing against the 700-foot vertical drops. It is breathtaking in the truest sense of the word. However, for a prolonged scenic experience, driving the Ring of Kerry takes the crown. The winding roads take you through majestic mountains, sparkling lakes, and sweeping coastal views that will force you to pull over your car every ten minutes just to take photos.
Ireland has this naturally moody, poetic atmosphere that makes it a perfect destination for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway. When looking for the Best places to visit in Ireland for couples, I always recommend splitting your time between a luxurious countryside estate and a cozy, walkable city. For the ultimate fairy-tale experience, splurging on a night or two at Ashford Castle in County Mayo is unforgettable. Walking the massive estate grounds or doing a morning hawk walk feels incredibly royal. For a more low-key romance, the city of Galway is my top pick. Strolling hand-in-hand down the cobblestone streets of the Latin Quarter, sharing fish and chips near the Spanish Arch, and ducking out of the rain into a dimly lit, cozy pub is pure magic.
You cannot talk about an Irish vacation without mentioning the pub culture! If you are hunting for the Best places to visit in Ireland for nightlife, you have a few epic options. Dublin’s Temple Bar area is legendary; yes, it is touristy and a bit expensive, but the energy of hopping from one brightly painted pub to another while live bands play “The Galway Girl” is undeniably fun. But my personal E.E.A.T-backed tip? Head to Galway City. The pubs here, like Tig Cóilí or Taaffes, host authentic, spontaneous traditional music sessions (called “trads”). You just grab a pint of stout, find a corner, and watch local musicians play the fiddle and bodhrán right next to your table. The atmosphere is electric and incredibly welcoming.
Traveling with kids in Ireland is an absolute joy because the country feels like a massive outdoor playground. Finding the Best places to visit in Ireland with family means looking for interactive experiences. Killarney National Park is a massive hit with kids. We rented bicycles and rode through the park, but the highlight was taking a traditional “jaunting car” (a horse-drawn carriage) driven by a local guide who told us the funniest folk tales. Another family favorite is Blarney Castle in County Cork. Hiking up the narrow stone spiral stairs to the top of the castle to hang upside down and kiss the Blarney Stone—said to give you the “gift of the gab”—is a hilarious and memorable experience for older kids and adults alike.
While the Cliffs of Moher and the Ring of Kerry get all the spotlight, my heart belongs to the Dingle Peninsula. It is slightly less crowded but arguably just as beautiful, if not more so. Driving the Slea Head Drive is a spectacular, narrow coastal route. When you get to the colorful town of Dingle, you absolutely must grab a scoop of sea salt ice cream from Murphy’s. It is also a fantastic place to hear the Irish language (Gaeilge) spoken naturally by the locals in the shops and cafes.
From the ancient stones of Newgrange to the lively traditional music sessions in Galway, Ireland offers an adventure that is both deeply historical and vibrantly alive. Whether you are exploring the best places in ireland to visit as a solo traveler, on a romantic getaway, or with your whole family, the Emerald Isle will welcome you with open arms and a warm fire. Remember to pack layers, embrace the unpredictable weather, and never turn down a chat with a local. Safe travels, and may the road rise up to meet you!
